Atlanta Apartment Shelves as Space Savers
Jun 2nd, 2008 by atlanta apartments
One of the biggest complaints about Atlanta apartments is usually that there just aren’t enough places for stuff. If you think you’ve used up every single piece of storage space in your Atlanta apartment, you may be overlooking an easy storage solution. Remember that storage space can be any flat surface. All you need to do is create some additional “flat surfaces.”
The Atlanta Apartment Pantry and Cabinets
Kitchen, bathroom and pantry cabinets are often designed to hold large items - a gallon jug or a tall bottle of soda. When you’re storing canned beans in that same shelf, you’re wasting a lot of space and there are some easy ways to fix this. One is to arrange items with an eye on the shelves available. Even if you tend to use those cans of corn regularly, the most space efficient shelf for them may be down low. Remember that small items on small shelves leave the large shelves for larger items.
But even when you’re paying attention to shelf height, there may be a lot of wasted space above your canned corn. Stacking it is an option but not necessarily a tidy one. At a local hardware store, purchase a board to fit into the cabinet. You can fasten it in with screws or set it on top of two bricks or even two tall cans - try tomato juice! This creates another entire shelf in your pantry without stacking cans precariously atop each other. Just remember to trade out your tomato juice cans occasionally.
Those hidden places aren’t the only way shelves can increase your storage space. If you don’t have enough storage space for your toaster, coffee maker and crock pot on the counters and are always rummaging through cabinets to find all the parts for a particular appliance, a book shelf could be the answer. You’ll find very inexpensive models at most home supply and retail stores that you put together yourself. The fact that they’re available in almost any size means you can find a unit that will fit perfectly on the counter beside the sink. The fact that you assemble it means you can adjust the shelves to meet your needs. Fit the microwave or other heavier appliances at the bottom and the lighter and less often used appliances near the top.
The same principles can be applied in the bathroom. One of the most overlooked storage spaces is directly above the commode. “Above-the-commode” units became popular a few decades ago but soon faded as too retro. The problem with most is that they’re ugly and have only a single shelf or two. If you have the option of installing custom shelving here, it could be well worth the expense. These open shelves make a great place for towels and wash clothes and can be a great accent piece. Choose glass shelves for a clean, modern look. Stain or paint wooden shelves for a country look or to add color to the room. Don’t overlook the possibility of wall paper or shelf paper as covering in order to add a coordinating touch.
Atlanta Apartment Entertainment Centers
While entertainment centers are a great way to add storage space, they’re also notorious for wasted space. Add decorative boxes or baskets to hold smaller items such as CDs, movies, video games or game controllers. Use the upper shelves for things that can be stored neatly - even books. Make the most of the space by adding shelves. You can probably match the stain of an existing entertainment center or use glass shelves for an automatic match to a modern piece of furniture. If your center is in need of a touch up, consider painting the entire unit when you add shelves so that it all matches exactly.
